Temp Tangi River bridge construction begins on LA 16
AMITE---Phase one of construction on the new LA 16 bridge over the Tangipahoa River bridge is underway.

Dirt work began several weeks ago as crews prepare a site immediately south of the existing bridge to build a temporary “detour bridge” over the river.

JB James is listed as the contractor in charge of the project.

According to the Louisiana Department of Transportation, construction on that temporary bridge will continue in earnest from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. daily from now through the end of September. Traffic interruptions are expected as intermittent and alternating flagging operations will be on site during this period.

DOTD advises motorists that detours are available to avoid the construction zone. Motorists traveling LA 16 westbound may take LA 1054 west to LA 10, then west to US 51, then south to re-intersect LA 16. Eastbound motorists traveling LA 16 may take US 51 north to LA 10, then east to LA 1054, then east to re-intersect LA 16.

The new bridge is expected to be complete in Spring, 2021. The cost of the total project is valued at $6,980,034.

This marks the third major bridge over the Tangipahoa River in Louisiana to be reconstructed since the 2016 floods. Shortly after the second flood, the Dunnington Bridge on LA 443 was closed for emergency replacement. Last summer, DOTD contractors began work on the Cherokee Bridge at LA 442. That project is nearing completion now. Extensive inspections of the parish’s other bridges over the Tangipahoa have been ongoing since the floods, as well, with improvements made on the LA 40 bridge near Independence earlier this year.
