The administration of a local elementary school worked with law enforcement Thursday morning to quickly and safely secure a weapon that was brought to school by a young student.
Principal Dana Topps notified the Amite Elementary Magnet School community that a gun was found and recovered on her campus early Thursday.
In a post on the school’s Facebook page, Topps said the school administration along with local law enforcement “acted swiftly and efficiently to secure the weapon and insure the safety of all students and staff.”
School Superintendent Melissa Stilley confirmed that the child was removed from campus. State law dictates penalties for anyone who brings a gun onto a school campus, including students.
