Student removed after gun found at IHS
INDEPENDENCE—An Independence High School student has been removed from campus after officials recovered a gun in the student’s possession Tuesday.
Tangipahoa Parish School Superintendent Melissa Stilley said IHS went on lockdown midday Tuesday after the school’s administration learned that there may be a student on campus who was allegedly in possession of a handgun.
“I am saddened and disappointed to confirm that a student was found in possession of a handgun at Independence High School today,” Stilley said Tuesday afternoon. She said the school notified law enforcement, but she refrained from offering any specific details on the case, which is now a “police matter.”
Stilley said the district will follow state law which specifies that a student found in possession of a weapon be removed from campus.
“Action was swiftly taken to ensure the safety of all students and employees on the IHS campus,” Stilley said. The superintendent commended the school for their quick handling of the situation, and she encouraged students and employees to be vigilant. “If you see something suspicious on campus, please follow through and report it."
