Stilley: TPSS saves $116K in legal fees on deseg case
AMITE—While positive negotiations continue in the Joyce Marie Moore federal desegregation case, one of the biggest gains the school system has experienced since voting to change their legal strategy in the more than 50-year-old lawsuit has been savings on attorney costs.

Tangipahoa Parish School Superintendent Melissa Stilley revealed Tuesday that the district has already saved more than $116,000 on attorney costs, and at an average of $23,000-plus per month, the district could annualize those savings to the tune of more than $250,000.

The announcement was part of Stilley's report to the Tangipahoa Parish School Board at their meeting Tuesday in Amite.

“I have always believed we could solve our problems by talking through them and working them out, but never have I seen a more dramatic example of this than when we started looking at the hard numbers,” Stilley said. “These are dollars that we can put directly into the classroom with our students.”

Stilley said finding a resolution to the desegregation case has been a priority of her first year as Superintendent.
