Three Lady Lions named to All-Southland Conference Team
HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana women’s soccer team had three players named to the 2018 All-Southland Conference Team including Sofia Olsson, Megan Gordon and Claire Huston, the league office announced Tuesday.

Olsson was named to the Second Team while Gordon and Huston were name Honorable Mention.

Olsson, the Orust, Sweden native, started all 17 matches. The senior scored two goals and anchored a defense that allowed just 16 goals in 17 matches (0.94 goals per match). The Lions’ defender has been remarkable as she played every minute of seven of the 11 conference matches. Tuesday is Olsson’s second time being selected to the All-Southland Team as she made Honorable Mention her freshman year.

“Sofia has been incredible at outside back for two years now,” said second-year SLU head soccer coach Chris McBride. “Last year, with us not making the tournament I don’t think she got the recognition she deserved but it’s very good to see her earn all-conference this year.”

Gordon, from Sheffield England, scored two goals and record two assists as she, like Olsson, has been model of durability. The midfielder played an astonishing 1001 of 1050 minutes in conference matches. The sophomore had 13 shots, five on goal and a game winning goal against Southern.

“Meg (Gordon) moved positions this year and was brilliant,” said McBride. “She made more interceptions and helped us create our attack and was pivotal for us this year.”

Huston, the Aurora, Colorado native, helped secure the back line for Southeastern which yielded one goal or less 14 times. The freshman’s physical play along with incredible accuracy on corner kicks made her one of the center pieces for the Lady Lions. The defender recorded an assist and had 10 shots with six on goal.

“Claire was someone we had high hopes for when she came in,” said McBride. “And she has not disappointed. She started every game this season which is remarkable for a freshman. She possesses great skill and leadership for such a young player.”

Olsson, Gordon and Huston will look to lead the Lions to a victory in the first round of the Southland Conference Tournament Wednesday night at 8 p.m. when they face Lamar.
