Lions bounce back and remain in first place

BEAUMONT, Texas – Preston Faulkner drove in the eventual winning run in the eighth inning and the Southeastern Louisiana bullpen held off Lamar in a 6-4 Lion win Sunday at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

Southeastern (27-21, 16-8 Southland) remains tied with Sam Houston State (, 16-8 Southland) atop the Southland Conference standings, setting up a first-place showdown at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field in Hammond, Louisiana, this coming weekend.

The Lions jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a pair of two-out runs in both the first and third innings, but the offense stalled out in the middle innings, leaving the bases loaded in both fourth and fifth.

Will Warren made quick work of the Cardinals’ hitters until the sixth. Lamar (16-31, 8-19 Southland) sent nine batters to the plate, scoring four runs off Warren and reliever Grant Upton to tie the game.

Southeastern bounced back in the eighth, regaining the lead. Cody Grosse led off the inning with an infield single and scored from first on Preston Faulkner’s RBI double to right-center field. Faulkner advanced to third when Lamar second baseman Logan Berlof mishandled a grounder off the bat of Kyle Schimpf.

With one out and runners on the corners, Nathan Pilutti fouled off a suicide squeeze attempt. The Cardinals pitched out on the pitch but the pickoff throw to third base from catcher Rhett McCall bounced down the left-field line, allowing Faulkner to score.

Payton Robinson, Kade Granier (2-2), Bryce Tassin and Jared Biddy combined to shut out Lamar over the final 3.1 innings.

Granier earned the win, tossing a scoreless inning and striking out three of the four batters he faced. Biddy earned his eighth save of the season, tying him for fifth-most by a Lion in a single season with Mike Kimbrell (1996) and Chris Province (2007). Cardinals’ reliever Jack Dallas (0-7) suffered the loss, surrendering two runs – one earned – in 3.1 innings pitched.

Biddy ranks sixth all-time in program history with 12 career saves, two behind Province (2004-07). Granier’s appearance was the 77th of his career, placing fourth all-time in program history.

Second baseman Brennan Breaud, designated hitter Jonathan Parker and right fielder Nathan Pilutti picked up a pair of hits apiece to lead the Lions at the plate. Breaud’s two hits give him 203 in his career and move him past Brett Hoffman (2012-15) into ninth place on the Lions’ career list.

Southeastern returns to Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field for its final four home games of the season. Tuesday’s 6 p.m. game against South Alabama is our annual Study Break game, in addition to being National Teacher Appreciation Day and a Cane’s Challenge contest.

The first 200 students in the gates at Tuesday’s home game will receive some free goodies to ease the pain that is finals week. Teachers presenting a valid teaching ID at the box/ticket office will receive two free tickets to the game.

If Southeastern scores five or more runs Tuesday versus the Jaguars, fans can redeem their game ticket or student coupon at their local participating Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers to receive a free combo with the purchase of another of equal or greater value.
