FRANKLINTON—Visitation is set for Sunday night and funeral services will be held Monday morning for a beloved Franklinton judge.

The Honorable Retired Judge Andy Clayton James, Jr., died early Saturday at his home in Franklinton. He was 82.

James was an 18-year member of the 22nd Judicial District Court. After his retirement, he served on the Court of Appeals and, as needed, he was used as an Ad Hoc Judge throughout the region.

A lifelong member of the Washington Parish Bar Association, James is perhaps best-known for his work establishing the Court Appointed Special Advocates in Washington Parish and from his work on the board of directors for the Washington Parish Council on Aging.

In his hometown of Franklinton, friends and colleagues mourned the Judge’s passing on Saturday.

Franklinton Police Chief Donald A. Folse, Jr. issued a statement on the passing of his friend:

“On behalf of the officers and staff of the Franklinton Police Department, it is with the utmost reverence and admiration that we acknowledge the passing of Judge Clayton James. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with his family and those who were privileged enough to call Judge James their friend.

“The Town of Franklinton is a better place, enveloped with the significant impact the judge had on his community.…An imposing figure, characterized by his firm but fair inclination, the judge set the benchmark of what a true gentleman should be,” Folse wrote.

Visitation will be held at Crain Funeral Home, located at 1109 Bene St., in Franklinton, on Sunday, Dec. 28, from 5-8 p.m. and again on Monday starting at 9 a.m.

Funeral services are scheduled Monday, Dec. 29, at 11 a.m. in the Crain Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Ellis Cemetery.
