Postponed: Shift to temp. LA 16 bridge over Tangi River on Oct. 25
DOTD announced this afternoon that the scheduled shift for traffic using the Tangipahoa River Bridge on LA 16 east of Amite will not begin tomorrow, as previously expected.
Instead, the bridge closure will begin on Friday, Oct. 25, and continue into March 2021.
When crews close the existing bridge, traffic will be shifted onto a temporary bridge adjacent to the current one. DOTD said traffic will be maintained through the work zone at all times; however, oversize loads over 11 feet wide will not be allowed.
Detours will also be posted for anyone who chooses to go around the construction zone.
On Friday, October 25, 2019, the LA 16 Tangipahoa River bridge, located 1.5 miles east of US 51 (NW Central Ave.) and 0.5 west of LA 1054, will be closed at 7:00 AM until approximately Monday, March 1, 2021 (weather permitting) for bridge demolition and related work. All traffic will be diverted onto the newly constructed detour road located adjacent to the old bridge. Traffic will be maintained through the work zone at all times.
Oversize loads over 11 feet wide are not allowed. Emergency vehicles will have access.
The following are alternate routes to avoid the construction zone:
Motorists traveling LA 16 westbound may take LA 1054 west to LA 10, then west to US 51, then south to re-intersect LA 16.
Motorists traveling LA 16 eastbound may take US 51 north to LA 10, then east to LA 1054, then east to re-intersect LA 16.
