PONCHATOULA---Three members of Girl Scout Troop 30004, a mutli-level troop in the Ponchatoula area, earned their Bronze Award for building wooden nesting boxes to keep farm bunnies warm last winter. The Bronze Award is the highest award available for Girl Scout Juniors in grades 4 and 5.

The Bronze Awardees Savannah Walters, Payten Roussel, and Emma Spansel wanted to help local farm, The Day Farm, after learning that many of its bunnies did not survive the winter months because the farm was using metal nesting boxes.

“The metal boxes don’t provide enough warmth for the bunnies to survive. As animal lovers, we knew we had to do something.” And so, they did. The girls made homemade dog treats to fund the construction and supplies for the wooden boxes, selling the treats at pet-friendly restaurants in the New Orleans area. Using pallet wood, they had wood cutting services donated from their local Home Depot. In the end, these Girl Scouts were able to build two new nesting boxes.

The Girl Scouting mission is to build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. For more information about Girl Scouts or adult volunteer opportunities, call the council office in New Orleans at 504-733-8220 or visit www.gsle.org.
