HAMMOND---A 59-year-old Hammond man was struck and killed by a train in downtown Hammond this afternoon.

 

According to witnesses, the man stepped in front of the oncoming train even though people near him tried to stop him. It is believed the victim did not hear their warnings.

 

The accident happened near Cate Street Seafood around 4 p.m.

 

Reliable sources say the victim, identified as Ernest Watts, died on the way to the hospital.
