N.A. James Funeral Home

Lillie Mae Miller Smith was born March 10, 1928, as the baby child of Lonnie and Lillie Roberts Miller, and adored little sister of Earnest Miller, Sr., of Velma, Louisiana and gracefully transitioned to glory on March 1, 2018. Mrs. Smith began her teaching career in the then segregated Tangipahoa Parish Public School System and later taught in the Orleans and Jefferson Parish Public School Systems, Louisiana Technical Institute, and Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office. She retired from education multiple times, but returned to her love of teaching again and again. Lillie studied at Grambling and Leland Colleges and earned her bachelor’s degree and later her Master of Elementary Education and Counseling.

Lillie was devoted to her husband, Stanford M. Smith, and he to her for over 58 years. The couple could be found attending Saints games together until Lillie’s health declined. Lillie was an astute business woman, community advocate and a great cook, known for blackberry cobblers, pecan pralines and homemade egg nog. She completed her career as a real estate broker.

At Union Bethel AME Church, New Orleans, her involvement included active participation in the Sunday School, launching the GATE Prison Ministry, leading Pastor’s Appreciation initiatives, a member of the choir, the Steward Board, and the Board of the Union Bethel Community Development Corporation.

Lillie leaves to cherish her memory one daughter, Yvonne Magee; one granddaughter, Kanika Magee; two-great grandchildren, Stephan and McKenzie; two nieces, Diane Hart (Donald) and Jeanette Gordon (Chris); five nephews, Earnest Jr. (Barbara), James (Pat), and Lynell (Carolyn) Miller; Harold (Ann), and Danny Smith; and a host of grand nieces and nephews, cousins, surrogate children and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lonnie and Lillie Miller; son, Stanford Smith, Jr.; brother, Earnest Miller, Sr.; sister-in-love, Dorothy Miller; mother- and father-in-love Richard and Ella Smith; brothers-in-love, Harold Sr. and Napoleon Smith; and sister-in-love Alta Mae Smith. She will forever be missed, but will live on in and with us forever.

Services will be held Friday March 9, 2018 at Union Bethel AME Church 2321 Thalia St. New Orleans, LA. Visitation 10:00am until the funeral service at 11:00am. Interment will follow at St. Louis Cemetery No. 3.
