HAMMOND – The Louisiana Small Business Development Center at Southeastern Louisiana University will host a Louisiana Industrial Development Executives Association (LIDEA) professional development course in Hammond.

Titled “Shaping Business Climate via Initiatives in Public Policy and Incentives,” the course is scheduled Sept. 25 and 26 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Southeast Louisiana Business Center, located at 1514 Martens Dr.

“Geographic location, transportation infrastructure, and wage rates are critical factors in investors’ location decisions but typically are beyond the direct influence of economic development organizations,” said SBDC Assistant Director Sandy Summers. “A community’s business climate, however, is a location factor where economic developers can have significant influence on business investors. Economic developers who understand the political and economic issues in public policy and know how to communicate effectively to legislators and public officials can have a major impact on improving the business climate in their communities.”

Summers said the two-day course will inform economic developers in Louisiana on the economic and political debates on business climate issues, such as taxes, regulations and incentives, and will also provide opportunities to improve individuals’ skills in communicating policy positions to the electronic and print media and in mobilizing business community participation in support of the policies.

“Typical tuition for this class is $600,” Summers said. “Thanks to our sponsors, USDA Rural Development, the Delta Regional Authority, Louisiana Economic Development, and American Electric Power, we are able to offer the class for $300. You can save even more money by being a member of LIDEA.”

Registration is available at www.lideatraining.com/policy-incentives. Space is limited, so early registration is recommended.
