The Tangipahoa Parish School Board voted unanimously Tuesday night to change insurance agents, but School Superintendent Melissa Stilley said the change will not negatively impact employee coverage.

The Board voted 9-0 to accept Stilley’s recommendation to change their agent of record for voluntary employee benefits from Taylor and Sons to BXS/Powell & Associates. The change goes into effect the first of the year.

Both firms offered equal bids for the employee “cafeteria plan” of voluntary insurance coverage; however, Stilley said she chose BXS/Powell because of feedback she had received from employees who were looking for improved customer service.

Taylor and Sons has worked in the TPSS for at least 40 years, company officials said during public input. They maintained that they were unaware of any complaints or concerns about their level of customer service.

Stilley said she asked each company to provide references. In her calls to BXS/Powell’s references, Stilley said each of the clients indicated that they were very pleased with the level of customer service they received. She said the word that kept coming up over and over again with regard to BXS/Powell was “exceptional” and she said that TPSS employees deserve “exceptional” service.
