HPD: Coroner report indicates child died of asphyxiation

March 1, 2019, City of Hammond, LA – On February 22, 2019, at approximately 6:30 pm, the Hammond Police Department responded to a medical emergency of a child not breathing and unresponsive on Angeli Drive.

Upon arrival, Acadian Ambulance and the Hammond Fire Department were performing CPR on the child. The child was transported to North Oaks Medical Center by Acadian Ambulance.

At North Oaks, life-saving measures were performed for approximately 40 minutes when a femoral pulse was found. The child was transferred to Our Lady of the Lake Pediatric ICU where he was placed on life support. On February 24, 2019, the child was removed from life support and passed away between 9:00 and 10:00 pm.

On the night of the accident, HPD detectives began their investigation, which included examining the scene, reviewing camera footage, and interviewing witnesses, doctors, and family members. An autopsy was performed on February 27, 2019, and the preliminary report indicates the child died of asphyxiation.

The investigation is on-going.

Due to the sensitivity of the case, HPD requested privacy for the family as they grieve.
