AMITE—The Tangipahoa Parish School Board will wait at least a couple more weeks—and maybe longer—before putting a permanent principal in place at Hammond High Magnet School.

The Board’s Personnel Committee Chairman Walter Daniels canceled the meeting Tuesday, approximately two hours before the committee was scheduled to consider the one item on the agenda, an administrative recommendation to name interim principal Shelly Gaydos as the full-time permanent principal at HHMS.

At the 5:30 p.m. full board meeting, outgoing School Superintendent Mark Kolwe asked the board to bring the Gaydos recommendation to the full board for consideration. On a motion by Brett Duncan and a second by Sandra Bailey Simmons, the issue failed in a 6-3 vote to even place the Gaydos matter on the agenda for a vote. Board members Andy Anderson, Betty Robinson, and Walter Daniels objected to placing the matter on the full board’s agenda Tuesday night.

Sources suggest the position will come up again at the next Personnel Committee meeting. Others say the job will wait until the next Superintendent is seated and has a chance to review the file.

Social media provided an outlet for Gaydos supporters to express their disappointment in Tuesday’s postponement. A number of local residents contacted ActionNews17 asking for an explanation or any kind of rationale for the delay, as well.
