HAMMOND---A third-generation firefighter with 15 years of service in the Hammond Fire Department has been ratified as Hammond’s new Fire Chief.

Captain Daniel T. Folks won the Hammond City Council's support Tuesday night to receive his appointment as Hammond Fire Chief.

"Daniel Folks has served the Hammond Fire Department for almost 15 years and has a proven record of fire suppression, prevention, and training; emergency medical services; and hazardous materials and disaster response. He believes in transparency and will lead the department in protecting the public and investing in innovative training, technology, and equipment. His experience with other fire departments and past committees has enabled him to see different perspectives," Hammond Mayor Pete Panepinto said in nominating Folks to the Council.

While still in high school, Folks joined the Natalbany Volunteer Fire Department, where his grandfather, the late Emmitt Perrilloux, had served for decades as fire chief. Young Daniel advanced through the ranks, moving from junior firefighter to an operator and then on to a part-time employee in 2001.

In 2004, Folks was hired by the Hammond Fire Department. There he worked through the ranks, gaining the trust and respect of his fellow firefighters. He is also an adjunct instructor with the Carroll Herring Fire and Emergency Training Institute, and is certified as a safety officer and a fire investigator. Folks is one of three certified EMT’s working at HFD and he is part of the USAR Task Force that is deployed in disaster situations, such as the 2016 floods.

As word spread Tuesday night of Folks' successful appointment, local firefighters and area departments offered their congratulations to the parish's newest fire chief.

The Natalbany Volunteer Fire Department shared their congratulations via Facebook, "Congratulations to Chief Daniel Folks, new Chief of Hammond Fire Department! It's always a proud moment when one of your own is recognized! Best of luck and we know your Paw Paw Chief Emmett Perrilloux is looking down beaming with pride! We know retired Assistant Chief Tommy Folks is beaming as well! Best of luck!!"

Folks was one of six applicants who interviewed for the Chief’s job. The post is part of the State Civil Service system.
