AMITE—Tangipahoa Parish School officials are gearing up for the new school year, and that includes making special preparations for the youngest of the parish’s students.

Tangipahoa Parish School Superintendent Melissa Stilley said applications are still being accepted for the Tangipahoa Parish Schools pre-Kindergarten program.

“We have a number of seats available for pre-K students at Amite Elementary, Chesbrough, Greenville Park, Hammond Westside, Lucille Nesom, Midway and O.W. Dillon, as well as spots for Independence Leadership Academy and Woodland Park Magnet students at our satellite campuses at Central Tangi Head Start and Explore and Learn,” Stilley said.

Parents or guardians who are interested in enrolling their four-year-old in the TPSS pre-K program should call (985) 748-2539 to schedule a registration appointment. Parents will need to bring the child’s original birth certificate and two proofs of income for each working adult in the household. If SNAP benefits are received, the document with the child’s name and certification date will serve as proof of income, school leaders said.

Stilley said pre-K student testing is scheduled Aug. 6-10. Teachers will be contacting parents to schedule appointments for students to report to campus for testing.

Other important pre-K dates to remember:
*Aug. 15 is pre-K Orientation Day for non-magnet school campuses. Parents of pre-K students who will attend magnet schools should contact their school to confirm orientation date and times.
*On Aug. 16-17, pre-K girls will attend classes at their respective school campuses. Aug. 20-21 will be “Boy Days,” and on Aug. 22, all pre-K students will attend classes together.

Stilley said once enrolled, Tangipahoa Parish pre-K students have all the same rights and responsibilities as traditional K-12 students. All pre-K students are eligible for the parish’s free healthy breakfast and lunch program for each and every day they are on campus.
