The National Weather Service confirmed Wednesday afternoon that the tornado which ripped through Amite on Tuesday was of F2 strength on the Fujita Scale.

The Fujita Scale, which ranks wind and damage from F1-F5, have winds which pack a punch between 113 to 157 mph.

Emergency crews remained on the scene throughout the day on Tuesday, but thus far there are no injuries reported after the tornado touched down east of Amite near the intersection of LA 16 and LA 1054 North Tuesday afternoon.

Officials report several homes that were badly damaged, and trees and power lines snapped from the heavy winds as the tornado ripped through this rural area east of Amite.

Tangipahoa Parish President Gordon Burgess was among the first to arrive at the scene and surveyed the damage. Assessment teams were expected to work through the evening if needed.

As of late Tuesday afternoon, road crews were working to remove storm debris from Eastwood, Israel Cutrer, and Chappapeela Roads east of town.

Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Dawn Panepinto reported that emergency responders were asking people to stay out of the damage area and if possible to get off the roadways as storms continue to move through the area.

Louisiana State Police were working traffic on the roadways. Several rural roads were still not passable.

At the height of the storm, Entergy's online outage reporting service showed approximately 1,750 customers in the Tangipahoa Parish who were without power. Crews were on the scene and expected service to be restored shortly before nightfall tonight.
