Muscarello presents resolution to HPD heroes


On Friday, State Representative Nicholas Muscarello, Jr., presented the following resolution to Hammond Police Chief Edwin Bergeron, Jr., to commend him and his department on their actions two weeks ago at the Target store in Hammond Square.

The resolution (HR 29 of the 1st special session of the 2020 Legislative session) reads:
A RESOLUTION
To commend Chief Edwin Bergeron, Jr., and the Hammond Police Department for their response to the events at the Hammond Square shopping center on June 5, 2020.

WHEREAS, on June 5, 2020, chaos erupted at the Hammond Square shopping center in Hammond when a man crashed a vehicle through the front of the store, dropped what appeared to be an explosive device, walked through the store threatening patrons, and then attempted to carjack someone in the parking lot; and

WHEREAS, the chaos sparked panic and rumors; the situation was dangerous and potentially fatal for anyone in the area; and

WHEREAS, thanks to the coordinated and professional response of law enforcement agencies, a situation with great potential for escalation was quickly brought under control: the area was secured and evacuated and the assailant was apprehended with no gun shots being fired and only one person receiving minor injuries; and

WHEREAS, critical to this heroic and effective response were the men and women of the Hammond Police Department and the stellar leadership of Chief Edwin Bergeron, Jr.; and

WHEREAS, Chief Bergeron and his department rapidly asserted their control of a very threatening situation that could have resulted in numerous casualties and worked diligently and quickly to mitigate fears and restore order; within a few hours the department was collecting evidence from the scene and providing for the recovery of personal automobiles from the shopping center parking lot; and

WHEREAS, Chief Bergeron and the Hammond Police Department are most deserving of the utmost respect for their bravery and professionalism; the citizens of Louisiana are very fortunate to have such dedicated officers protecting us at such times.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend Chief Edwin Bergeron, Jr., and the Hammond Police Department for their response to the events at the Hammond Square shopping center on June 5, 2020, and does hereby record for posterity the exemplary professionalism and heroics displayed by the men and women of the department.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Chief Edwin Bergeron, Jr. and members of the Hammond Police Department.
