Mike Cooper elected Parish President

Former Covington Mayor Mike Cooper has been elected as the next St. Tammany Parish President.

According to complete but unofficial returns, Cooper carried 61 percent of the vote to defeat two-term incumbent Pat Brister.

Cooper, a former mayor of Covington, nearly defeated Brister in the primary, garnering more than 45 percent of the vote in the three-candidate race.

Saturday, Cooper was elated with the run-off victory:

"This is the outcome we all worked so hard for and we're all proud of this achievement," Cooper said. "This was not easy and we knew from the start that it wouldn't be, but the people of St. Tammany are ready for a change and today they've said so loud and clear.

"My campaign was based on a platform of addressing transportation, traffic, and infrastructure needs; utilizing our tax revenues wisely and efficiently; and restoring trust and confidence in Parish Government. This positive message resonated with the voters of St Tammany and I thank them," said Cooper, a former two-term mayor of Covington. "I sincerely appreciate the work and support so many have given us since we started this race a year ago, and I truly appreciate Pat Brister's service for the last eight years.

"Nobody wants to hear policy discussions or specific plans tonight, but we have them! I look forward to meeting with the outgoing administration soon, and to beginning a quick transition process that will better serve all the people of St. Tammany Parish."

Brister's term continues until early January, when the new Parish President and Parish Council will be sworn in for their four-years.
