To the employees, friends, and citizens of the City of Hammond…..

As I sit here at my desk on the last working day of my tenure as serving as Mayor of the great City of Hammond, I am remembering all the wonderful things that have happened to me and to the city over the past twelve years.  Gee how the time has flown by.  I remember the very first day when I kept asking “can I do this and can I do that?”  My staff just looked at me and said “You can do whatever you want; you are the Mayor!”  That was when I realized what an awesome task and responsibility it is for whoever who sits in this chair.

In retrospect, we have seen the best of times and the worst of times.  Our defining moment was in August, 2005, when Katrina blew through our area and through New Orleans.  Our citizens rallied together like never before.  Out of the rubble came a new Hammond.

If I started listing all the people that have made this journey possible, it would read like a Tangipahoa Parish phone book and then I would still miss someone.  Let me say again, as I have many times before, ALL of our efforts have been a TEAM effort.  No one person can do this job.  It takes everyone on the same path knowing what the ultimate goal is—to better the lives of our people!  To each and everyone one of you I say THANK YOU!

In parting, I ask that you please support our new mayor Pete Panepinto.  Mayor Pete comes to this job with four years’ experience in municipal government, including two years as Director of Administration.  He has supported me and my goals, but to a greater extent he has supported the people in doing what is best for the city.  Sometimes it takes guts to make decisions knowing that a particular decision may not be the most politically expedient one.  If you support him as you have supported me, the next twelve years will be even better than the last twelve.

I love you all.  I love this City, this Parish, this State, and a country like no other, our United States of America.  May God bless us all.
