Hammond wins grant to remove litter
HAMMOND---The City of Hammond's Keep Hammond Beautiful Committee has been awarded a Litter Cleanup Supplies Affiliate Grant by Keep Louisiana Beautiful, the State's anti-litter and community improvement organization.
Valued at $633.98, the supplies received have already been used to collect 118 bags of trash.
"We've only held two community cleanups so far, but the turnout has been great," said Dori St. Cyr, KHB's Executive Director. In September, 30 volunteers helped clean up around the Tangipahoa African American Heritage Museum & Veterans Archive. In October, 52 turned out for a cleanup of Historic Downtown Hammond. In all, these volunteers have donated 203 hours valued at more than $5,000 to litter prevention and keeping Hammond beautiful.
St. Cyr says she expects even bigger turnouts in April and May, around the time of the next Cleanest City competition, which the City has won the past 13 years in a row.
"We're extremely grateful for our volunteers—and for the support of our State legislators, who make grant programs like this one, which do make a difference, possible," added St. Cyr.
KHB will be busy over the next several months with cleanups planned January–May typically from 8:00–10:00 a.m. one Saturday each month. The organization will also be giving away 100 native trees on Louisiana Arbor Day, Friday, January 17.
"We encourage anyone interested in keeping Hammond beautiful to come out," said St. Cyr.
