Homicide suspect turns self in after overnight murder in Prairieville

Ascension Parish authorities report that a 23-year old man wanted in connection with an overnight homicide in Prairieville on Christmas Eve has surrendered.

Authorities say Kevin Sheppard, accused of killing 22-year-old Lewis Sanchez of Denham Springs and wounding 18-year-old Joshua Perez of Gonzales, turned himself in on Wednesday morning.

According to the APSO, Sheppard, Sanchez and Perez were riding in an SUV with two other men just before 2 a.m. on Dec. 24, 2014 and stopped on Josh Brown Road to allegedly buy narcotics.

An argument had already ensured during the drive and upon stopping the SUV, Sheppard pulled out a gun and began to shoot.

APSO deputies said Sheppard fled the scene with another man, Michael Lomas, after the shooting.

Left behind were Sanchez, Perez, and Perez's brother.

Sanchez died as a result of the shooting.

The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office has charged Sheppard with first degree murder, attempted first degree murder, carrying a firearm by a convicted felon, illegal use and carrying of weapons.

The APSO added that Sheppard has at least 13 prior arrests, and was convicted of simple robbery in Lafayette in 2011 where he was sentenced to three years’ probation.

ORIGINAL STORY:

The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office is investigating a homicide that occurred at about 1:51 a.m. this morning on Josh Brown Road in Prairieville.

According to Chief Deputy Tony Bacala, 22-year-old Lewis Sanchez of Denham Springs and 18-year-old Joshua Perez of Gonzales were in a vehicle with three other men when an argument broke out and shots were fired.

As a result of the gunfire, Sanchez was killed and Perez was seriously wounded.

Based on statements given to investigators by witnesses it is believed that Lewis Sanchez, Joshua Perez, Jacob Perez who is the brother of Joshua, Michael Lomas and Kevin Sheppard were riding together in a white Chevrolet Suburban and had stopped on Josh Brown Road to buy narcotics.

While parked on Josh Brown Road, the argument, which had begun while the men were riding, continued and without any apparent provocation, Kevin Sheppard who was not directly involved in the argument pulled out a handgun and began firing.

After the shooting, Lomas and Sheppard left the scene in the Suburban, with Lomas driving, leaving Sanchez and the Perez brothers behind.

However, about two hours after the shooting occurred, Lomas was brought to the Sheriff's Office by his mother to meet with investigators.

Kevin Sheppard, 23, of Prairieville is wanted for First Degree Murder, Attempted First Degree Murder, Carrying of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Illegal Use of Weapons, and Illegal Carrying of Weapons.

Sheppard has no known permanent address and is believed to still be in the Chevrolet Suburban which is a 1994 model with a Louisiana license plate number YPW944.

Sheppard's record includes 13 prior arrests and a conviction for Principal to Simple Robbery in Lafayette where he was sentenced in October of 2011 to three years of probation.
