Updated with video: Port Board rejects Manchac developers

PONCHATOULA---In a split vote, the South Tangipahoa Parish Port Commission has decided to stop all consideration of the Village at Port Manchac project and go back to “just port business” at their site along Old U.S. 51 at the southern base of the parish.

Port Commission Chairman Daryl Ferrara delivered the deciding vote to kill all immediate consideration of the project which was proposed for the 40-acre primary port site.

Ferrara and Commissioners Wesley Daniels and Bill Joubert defeated efforts by fellow Commissioner Dr. James Nelson to authorize board leadership to meet with Village developer Terry Jones and commission legal counsel to develop a “mutually agreeable memorandum of understanding (MOU) by which the Village developers may engage in a study to determine the economic and environmental feasibility of pursuing a development—incorporating commerce, recreation, and green space—on the 40 acres of Port Manchac.”

Under the terms of the vote Tuesday, the Port commission indicated they will conduct a study for the best use of their current 40-acre tract but the group did not specify what kind of study they would pursue.

Approximately one dozen residents and concerned citizens spoke to the Commission during the course of the less than two hour meeting. Most of the speakers opposed the Village development.
