Parish Councilman Louis Joseph blasts school board member
Letter to the Editor:

I received an alarming and appalling text message from someone in Ponchatoula with reference to a post on social media posted by the former President of the Tangipahoa Parish School Board, Mike Whitlow. The post reads´” If we want to make America great again, we will have to make evil people fear punishment again”, and the text also included the picture of a hangman’s noose.

I am extremely offended by his post as we all know the history and meaning of the hangman’s noose, especially as it pertains to African Americans. Being the former Superintendent of schools for four years and a Viet Nam Veteran have afforded me the opportunity to make friends of all races, creed and color in this entire parish especially Ponchatoula. I feel that they are just as appalled and offended by your egregious and unfortunate post as I am.

As a member of the school board, what message are you sending to the students, employees, and parents of our school system, let alone people that may be considering moving into our parish? One aspect of leadership is not only doing what is right, but also to do the right thing. With your mentality, who can trust you to do what is right or to do the right thing?

You later apologized to all that read your post; however, I remind you that Proverbs 23:7 says “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he.

Louis L. Joseph
Former Superintendent of Schools
Tangipahoa Parish
