Miller issues state of emergency for local waterways

A second case of freshwater intrusion into Tangipahoa’s estuaries and waterways has prompted Tangipahoa Parish President Robby Miller to execute a parish-wide state of emergency in response to the second opening of the Bonnet Carre Spillway this spring.

In the order, which was signed at 8 a.m. Thursday, Miller says a “parish-wide state of emergency is declared as a result of the opening of the Bonnet Carre Spillway, which has created emergency conditions….”

Miller said the order is unrelated to the subtropical rain event that pushed through the area Thursday.

Under the terms of the executive order, the Parish President acknowledges that the reopening of the Spillway will likely cause “further increase in the influx of freshwater into the Parish’s estuaries and waterways.” In the order, Miller also expresses concern for local commercial fishermen, who “have seen a decline in seafood harvesting since the opening of the Bonnet Carre Spillway.”

The Parish seeks state and federal attention for the plight of these fishermen, under the terms of the executive order.
