HOMECOMING: SLU students will build house for family

HAMMOND---Ginger Ford Northshore Fuller Center for Housing and Southeastern Louisiana University Student Government Association are proud to announce an upcoming service-learning project called the “Green and Gold Build”. The event will commence during the week of Homecoming 2019 when university students, faculty, staff and alumni will construct a 5 bedroom 2 bath house frame on campus in an effort to support The Fuller Center’s affordable housing mission. The house frame will later be transported to a nearby neighborhood where student groups will take turns completing construction of the home throughout the Spring Semester.

Up to 100 volunteers made up of students, faculty, staff and alumni are needed on Friday October 11th to build the walls for the future home of Ms. Tewanda Morris and her six children: Omartre Wilson, Jr. - 14, TyBranell Wilson - 12, Taraji Wilson - 9, Delmas Dunn III - 8, Trinity Dunn and Trent Dunn – 6 year old twins. Ms. Morris is recently employed as a Certified Nursing Assistant with North Oaks Medical Center in the Step-Down unit. She qualified for the Fuller Center’s affordable housing program almost 2 years ago and she is anxious to have a home of her own for her family.

Ms. Morris began working toward her sweat equity requirement of 350 hours last year when she helped build a Fuller Center house for another local family. She will make interest-free monthly payments to Ginger Ford Northshore Fuller Center until her home is paid off. “It’s truly a ‘pay-it-forward’ program” said Executive Director and Southeastern Alumna, Tamara Danel. “The more houses we build, the more repayments we receive to use on building affordable homes for the families we serve. It’s a hand-up, NOT a hand-out.”, she said.

Events like The Green and Gold Build take place all around the country in school and church parking lots with the help of Crossroads Missions Help Build Hope program based out of Louisville, KY. Crossroads Missions supplies the house plans, the construction management, and the tools for up to 100 volunteers to accomplish building a modest-size house frame in a day. At the end of the day, staff and volunteers will stand the walls in the shape of the house so that volunteers can admire their work, sign the walls and take pictures. The walls will then be loaded onto a flatbed trailer and taken to The Fuller Center for storage until the Spring semester when Southeastern students will complete the construction in a Hammond neighborhood.

When asked how this event ties into Homecoming, SGA President, Karley Bordelon, stated “It is so important for students to have the opportunity to be servant leaders on campus and in the community. We wanted to have an event similar to our BIG Event in the Spring, that could bring students together and show them how powerful serving those in need can be. I would love for this to become a tradition, for years to come, so students can be proud of something impactful that they were a vital part of.” Students, faculty, staff and alumni may register online at the following address https://crossroadsmissions.breezechms.com/form/gingerfordnfc_slu.

Ginger Ford Northshore Fuller Center for Housing, a nonprofit housing ministry serving Tangipahoa and Livingston Parishes, is always in need of discounted and donated construction supplies as well as monetary donations to purchase building materials. They invite all Southeastern alumni to dig deep and support this event with their time, talents and resources. Investar Bank, the Northshore Homebuilders Association, The Hammond Community Foundation and Cameron and Marcia Barr have kickstarted the fundraising effort for this $85,000 project. Donations for the “Green and Gold Build” may be sent to Ginger Ford Northshore Fuller Center at 955 S. Morrison Blvd. Hammond, LA 70403 or they may be made online at www.fullercenter.org/gingerfordnorthshore/.
