HAMMOND---As the FIFA Women’s World Cup and Men’s Concacaf Gold Cup excitement continues in the country, the Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) has announced the 2020 Boys’ and Girls’ Soccer State Championships will be held in Strawberry Stadium on the campus of Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond.

The championship games will be played February 26 – 29, 2020.

“The LHSAA will be celebrating its 100th year of existence next year, and we couldn’t have chosen a better complement to continue our athletic championship traditions in Louisiana high school sports,” said Louisiana High School Assistant Executive Director Fallon Buckner. “After touring the facilities, hands down, Strawberry Stadium will provide our athletes, coaches and fans with the finest championship atmosphere, and for those reasons, we are thrilled to bring the event to Hammond.”

Buckner said there is a buzz of excitement amidst the soccer community, and everyone seems to be embracing the new venue and location.

“We are proud to be part of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association’s long tradition of hosting outstanding high school championships,” said Tangipahoa Parish Convention and Visitors Bureau’s Executive Director Carla Tate. “Southeastern Louisiana University’s Strawberry Stadium will be a great venue for the soccer state championships. Plus with all of the excitement from the recent Women’s World Cup victory, this will only add to the championship atmosphere.”

Tate said hosting the LHSAA Soccer State Championships will be a team effort with the Tourist Commission, Southeastern Louisiana University, Tangipahoa Parish President Robby Miller and Parish Government, Hammond Mayor Pete Panepinto and the City of Hammond, the Greater Hammond Chamber of Commerce, and local businesses and hotels.

“We are looking forward to competitive soccer championship matches and our goal is to help make the 2020 LHSAA Soccer State Championships a memorable event for the players, coaches and fans.”
