Board postpones softball field project, eyes roundabout needs
After a lengthy discussion of more than $450,000 worth of driveway improvements that will be necessary at two Ponchatoula schools, the Tangipahoa Parish School Board voted 6-3 Tuesday night to hold off spending $33,200 on capital improvements to the Ponchatoula High softball field.

South Tangi board members Randy Bush, Rose Dominguez, and Glenn Westmoreland were the lone trio to support the project which would have awarded the bid to D & H Quality Construction to install 2000 square feet of concrete and construct a 2800 square foot steel canopy at the PHS softball field. The remaining six board members indicated that while they had supported the project in committee, that was before they knew about the need to build new carpool driveways for Ponchatoula High School and Martha Vinyard Elementary Schools.

Those driveways, which will cost an estimated $464,000, are necessary to begin work on roundabout at the intersection of LA 22 and Dunson/Ridgel roads. That project has been in the works for approximately three years and is now ready to be bid by the state, if the school system can contribute to the project by moving those existing driveways.

Dominguez said she hopes the public will realize that DOTD is not funding the project on its own and that the district will be picking up a significant portion of the cost to make this roundabout happen.

Parish President Robby Miller and engineer Chuck Spangler were on hand to outline the project, which will not only have to clear the Corps of Engineers, but also the federal court which monitors spending on district projects.

The board approved the project unanimously in committee Tuesday night but it will not be up for final adoption until their April 4 meeting.

Officials hope to bid the project in late April or early May with work set to begin during the summer break.
