Hammond man charged in Monday morning murder

From the Hammond Police Department

Today at approximately 2:30 am, the Hammond Police Department responded to an altercation on East Park Avenue.

While en route to the incident, HPD officers observed a person lying in the middle of South Walnut Street and stopped to render aid. Officers learned the unresponsive male was John “Peter Gunn” Carter, 60 years old of Hammond, and notified HPD detectives, the Hammond Fire Department and Acadian Ambulance.

Carter was later pronounced dead on the scene. Detectives were advised by officers on the scene that they were responding to an altercation at a residence around the corner on East Park Avenue, where Carter had been damaging property and arguing with someone.

Through the investigation, detectives were able to determine that Johnny Dantzler Jr., 42 years old of Hammond, allegedly struck Carter in the face and head with a weapon during the altercation. An arrest warrant for second degree murder was obtained for Dantzler, and he was taken into custody without incident.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information on this incident can contact Detective Ronney Domiano, with the Hammond Police Department Criminal Investigations Division, at 985-277-5739 or by email to, or call Crime Stoppers of Tangipahoa’s anonymous tip line at 1-800-554-5245.
