Baseball America names Riser one of nation’s best under 40
HAMMOND – National publication Baseball America released its list of the top college baseball coaches under the age of 40 Thursday, ranking Southeastern Louisiana’s Matt Riser third on its list.

Once the youngest Division I head coach in the nation, Riser has pushed the Lions to become a perennial postseason contender with three trips to NCAA postseason play since 2014.

During his five seasons at the helm of Southeastern’s program, the Lions have generated 15 Major League draft picks, eight All-Americans, three conference players of the year, three national players of the week and the best RPI in the history of the Southland Conference.

In the classroom, Southeastern leads the Southland with 125 players named to the conference honor roll, 18 Southland All-Academic performers, one CoSIDA Academic All-American and a program record 3.31 GPA. The Lions’ graduation success rate (GSR) stands at 92 percent and the Southeastern baseball program has completed a Southland-leading 4,749 community service hours.

Topping Baseball America’s list are Central Florida’s Greg Lovelady and Kent State’s Jeff Duncan, both 39. Five years their junior, Riser has compiled a .654 winning percentage, fourth-best in Southland Conference history, and his teams average 39 wins per season.

The last time the publication compiled this particular list (2012) it included Josh Holliday, who since skippered Oklahoma State on back-to-back trips to the College World Series, and Andrew Checketts, who later guided UC Santa Barbara through a Cinderella trip to Omaha.
