After 2 years, Animal Services reunites owner, lost dog

For the St. Tammany Parish Department of Animal Services, it was business as usual when they recently took in Isabella — a dog who was surrendered because her owner had died.

Shelter staff scanned Isabella for a microchip and learned that she actually belonged to someone else— Susan Pitre — who had not seen Bella, as she is known — in over two years, since she got out of her yard and was lost.

The person who found Isabella, took her in as his own.

“Our team at Animal Services is dedicated in every way to the animals in their care,” said Pat Brister, St. Tammany Parish President. “This is just one of many success stories pets and their owners have experienced as a result of the hard work of the employees at Animal Services, and their smart standard operating procedures.”

“As soon as any animal is brought in to our shelter, one of the first things we do is scan them. If they have a microchip, and the information is kept up-to-date, we can find the proper owner and contact them to come and get their pet — who is to most people, actually a member of their family,” said Melisa Sullivan, Director of St. Tammany Parish Department of Animal Services. “Nothing makes us happier than a successful reunion, and this one was especially beautiful to watch. This is one reason why every animal in adoption is microchipped.”

When an animal is adopted from the St. Tammany Parish Department of Animal Services, spaying/neutering, microchipping, and vaccinations are included in the adoption fee. July is National Lost Pet Prevention Month. Shelter officials urge all pet owners to microchip their pets, no matter where they are adopted/purchased from, so that in the event that the pet is lost, shelter and veterinarians can scan them and find their owners.

Until July 31, 2019, all adoption fees are waived for adoptable pets at the Animal Services Shelter, located at 31078 Highway 36, in the Lacombe area. Adoption hours are from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Monday- Saturday.
