Franklinton Police grapple with rumors of school shooting

From the Franklinton Police Department

Chief Justin Brown addressed the faculty and students at Franklinton High School this morning regarding rumors related to a school shooting.

The Franklinton Police Department received information over the weekend which initiated an investigation. The investigation concluded the information was based on an unsubstantiated rumor which had in no way been communicated. Moreover, the rumors were based on completely false information spread by students and parents.

The Franklinton Police Department acts on any information and treats it as if were reliable until proven otherwise. Out of an overabundance of caution, officers were present on campus until the investigation was complete.

Following residual rumors, Chief Brown requested the school call an assembly to address the issue and ensure the students the rumors were false.

Chief Brown also cautioned the students about spreading such rumors and the legal ramifications which exist by those that do so.

Chief Brown and the staff at the Franklinton Police Department have taken a proactive approach to school safety by assisting in re-writing the school's crisis plan and actively participating and conducting drills within our school system.

At no point were the students at risk and our department worked tirelessly with the Washington Parish School Board and the administration at FHS to investigate the claim.

The safety of our schools is a priority and a matter which is taken very seriously. Although we can not stop rumors from happening, we can hold those responsible for spreading them and evoking unnecessary fear within the community.
