Kentwood schools close Thursday; Amite on Friday for games
AMITE—Tangipahoa Parish School Superintendent Melissa Stilley announced Saturday that classes will be dismissed in the Amite and Kentwood-area schools on game day so Warrior and ‘Roo fans can attend the Louisiana High School Athletic Association’s State Championship football games.

Stilley said she will dismiss classes at Kentwood High and O.W. Dillon Elementary on Thursday, Dec. 6, so Roo fans can attend their team’s game at noon that day in the New Orleans Superdome.

On Friday, Dec. 7, classes at Amite High, Amite West Side Middle, Amite Elementary Magnet, and Roseland Montessori will be dismissed so Warrior fans can attend their team’s noon game, also at the New Orleans Superdome.

Stilley said her decision was strongly influenced by an early Saturday request from School Board member Walter Daniels, whose district includes both communities.

“Mr. Daniels called me bright and early Saturday morning to advocate that we cancel classes not only at the high schools but also at the local feeder schools so that all students and families can travel to New Orleans to cheer on their respective teams,” Stilley said.

Stilley said the entire district is “beaming” with pride for these two Dome-bound teams, and she encouraged everyone to show support for the Roos and the Warriors as they prepare for their big games later this week.

“A game of this caliber can be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We are so proud of these young men for their efforts both on and off the field, and we want to show them that our entire parish is rooting for them as they prepare for the biggest games of the year,” Stilley said.

The Superintendent noted that she hopes to include a brief salute to these two championship-bound teams at Tuesday night’s Tangipahoa Parish School Board meeting in Amite.
