From the Denham Springs Police Department

This week, DSPD officers began training in Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) and the administration of Narcan. The training was conducted in the classroom of DSPD. The TCCC portion of the training was conducted by DSPD Officer Cody Ballard, NREMT, a two year veteran of the department and previously a field medic with Acadian Ambulance for five years. The addiction awareness and opioid reversal portion of the training was conducted by Heather Gernold of the Florida Parishes Human Services Authority and Tina McPhearson of Volunteers of America Southeast Louisiana.

Gernold is a Training, Education, and Technical Assistance Coordinator with her agency and McPhearson is a Peer Support Specialist with hers.

TCCC training focuses on preventable deaths from extremity hemorrhage, tension pneumothorax, and airway obstruction through lecture, multimedia presentations, demonstrations, and simulation exercises.
Recently, DSPD received Narcan kits from the Florida Parishes Human Services Authority and IFAKS (Individual First Aid Kit) from Friends of the Denham Springs Police Department. Previously all officers had been issued tourniquets and holsters for wear on their duty belts.

The issued IFAKS contain hemostatic agents, tourniquets, pressure bandages, occlusive chest seals, gloves, tape, scissors, and other bandages.

Training and equipping our officers to immediately deal with traumatic injuries and narcotic exposures enables them to better care for themselves, each other, and the public that they serve.
