STPSO warns of scams involving voice impersonations

Author: Action News 17/Wednesday, May 15, 2019/Categories: Front Page, Crime

From the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office:
We have been made aware of a phone scam going around.

The caller uses artificial intelligence technology, which gives them the ability to spoof a voice, in an attempt to convince potential victims that their child or another loved one has been kindnapped.

The scammers use what appears to be the voice of the potential victim’s child or loved one to scare them into paying a ransom.

If you receive a suspicious call of this nature or of any nature, please hang up and call local law enforcement (Stpso - 985-898-2338) or 911.
