Press Release from Hammond Police:
January 2, 2020, City of Hammond, LA – The Hammond Police Department has been working diligently with residents of Hammond’s Iowa District due to an increase in crime in the past few months.
On January 2, 2020, HPD Officers were patrolling the area when they observed a male walking in the middle of East Coleman Street and South Cherry Street. This individual was blocking the flow of traffic and forcing vehicles to have to stop and/or go around him. Officers conducted an interview of the individual, who was identified as a Cody Austin, 24 years old of Robert, who had many prior arrests and convictions. During the interview, Austin stated that he had a handgun in his book bag. He was arrested for obstruction of the roadway. After his arrest, HPD Officers located the loaded semi-automatic handgun, which was "reported stolen in a residential burglary," according to investigators.
Austin was charged with Obstruction of the Roadway, Possession of Stolen Property and Felon in Possession of a Firearm. He was subsequently booked into HPD Jail.
*An earlier version of this story indicated the gun was "reported stolen from Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office." That was later clarified to mean the gun was reported stolen in a case under investigation by the TPSO. --Editor
