Hammond man charged with theft, possession of stolen property

HAMMOND, LA - October 9, 2018 - Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards reports the arrest of 40-year-old Charles Edward Bickham of Hammond on Friday, October 5, 2018.

TPSO Detectives began investigating Bickham after receiving a Crime Stoppers tip regarding an on-going investigation into a rash of recent A/C Unit burglaries. Consequently, further investigation led detectives to Bickham's residence. While approaching the residence in an attempt to make contact, detectives observed Bickham flee from the residence on foot. Left standing in the yard, detectives couldn't help but observe pieces parts and of air conditioning unit(s) scattered all on the ground of Bickham’s property. The items scattered in Bickham's yard was quickly identified as the same air conditioning materials (make and type) as those reported stolen from a business off of Old Baton Rouge Highway in the Pumpkin Center area.

As a result, detectives secured the evidence and prepared search warrants for Bickham, his residence, and the property. Once obtained,TPSO Detectives Koven Banks and Cameron Crockett returned to Baker Lane residence to execute the warrants. As a result, Bickham was taken into custody after attempting to hide from detectives in bedroom closet. Subsequent to arrest, Bickham allegedly admitted to entering the property of multiple business and churches with the purpose of stealing air conditioning units for the purpose of scraping the air conditioning units to support a drug addiction. TPSO says Bickham has admitted to at least (10) ten separate air condition thefts from multiple locations. Bickham also stated that there are possibly more, but couldn’t recall due to being under the influence of synthetic marijuana and cocaine.

Bickham has been charged on multiple counts of each of the following offenses. Felony theft, criminal damage to property - felony, possession of stolen property, criminal trespass, and burglary of a residence.
