8th Ward fireman arrested for deploying cameras to film women

PONCHATOULA, LA -- - Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards reports the arrest of 42-year-old Ponchatoula resident, James A. Vining.

Vining, who was a volunteer fireman with the 8th Ward Fire Department, has been charged with multiple counts of video voyeurism, child pornography, malfeasants in office, and several drug and firearm offenses.

During the investigation that began May 18, 2018, it was determined that before a Halloween Party in October of 2017, Vining gained access to the 8th Ward Firehouse to secretly hide a camera in the woman's bathroom. The investigation also revealed that on several occasions, Vining hid cameras in his own residence to capture unsuspecting visitors and friends.

On July 23, 2018, the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office executed a search warrant at Vining's residence located in Ponchatoula, LA. As a result of the search, detectives located illegal narcotics and several firearms.

Consequently, over the course of several days, Vining found himself facing multiple felony charges. On July 24, 2018, Vining was taken into custody and charged with video voyeurism, possession of CDS I (marijuana), possession of CDSII (meth), possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of a firearm while in possession of a controlled dangerous substance. On July 25, 2018, 17 counts of video voyeurism were added to Vining's charges, and on August 1, 2018, one count of pornography involving a juvenile.

The investigation into Vining's heinous activity is on-going. Sheriff Edwards commends Fire Chief Ira Brown and members of the 8th Ward Fire Department for their full support and cooperation during the investigation. Their partnership and efforts directly contributed to the success of the investigation.
