VELMA---Tangipahoa Parish Councilman Louis "Nick" Joseph announced this week that he will seek re-election to his District 3 seat this fall.

District 3 comprises parts of Independence, Velma, Amite, Roseland, Arcola and Fluker.

Joseph's announcement follows:

I have been a resident of Independence for 49 years and have served on the parish council for the past 7 years. Some of my accomplishments this term are the overlaying of over 10 miles of roads in District 3, pursuing a million dollar sewer grant in an effort to improve the quality of life for the Velma area, merged North Tangi -Clean Anti-Litter Program with Keep Tangipahoa Parish Beautiful, facilitated the committees that named several parish governmental building in honor of veterans, continuously working to improve drainage in District 3. I will continue to work with our Legislative Delegation to secure funds for another exit/entrance route in Fluker. I will continue to represent my district by serving on the Parish Library Board and will work to bring back the Bookmobile throughout the parish and will continue to work diligently in an effort to secure funds to construct a new library in the Kentwood area that will also serve the Arcola and Fluker areas. My long range plans are to work with the parish grant writers in an effort to provide wide band services to rural areas of the parish, continue to expand services delivered by Hood Memorial Hospital, continue to work with the Amite Recreation Board in an effort improve the quality of recreational programs for our youths.

I am a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church where I serve as Chairman of the Trustee Board and Life member of Southern University and Southeastern Louisiana University Alumni Associations. I serve as President of Gravity Drainage District #1, Vice President of Tangipahoa Parish Rural Fire Protection District# 2, Keep Tangi Beautiful Board Member, Vice President of Police Jury Veterans Affairs Committee and secretary of the Tangipahoa Parish Teachers’ Credit Union. I am also a member of the following organizations: Louisiana Police Jury Association, Viet Nam Veterans of America Chapter 1052, Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), National Guard Association of Louisiana and the United States, Louisiana Retired Teachers Association, Louisiana Association of School Executives, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated, Phi Delta Kappa International, and American Legion Post 583. I also serve as a consultant for the Louisiana National Guard Youth Challenge Program. I hold a B.S. Degree from Southern University and a Master’s Degree plus 30 from Southeastern. I was recently awarded a Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Southern University for the work I have done for the betterment of humankind.

I am running on my record of service to my constituents as I have tried to address every problem personally. I am very conscientious and I feel that my work speaks for me. I have the time, energy, compassion and knowledge to perform the duties of a councilman, having retired from the Louisiana Army National Guard holding the rank of Chief Warrant Officer-5 as a personnel officer, and from the Tangipahoa Parish School System as Superintendent in 2007.
