Council considers renaming building in Burgess' memory

AMITE—The Tangipahoa Parish Council will introduce an ordinance Monday night to rename the Tangipahoa Parish Government “Council Office” in memory of the first parish president.

Tonight the council will introduce Ordinance No. 19-33 to name the administration building in honor of Gordon Burgess, the first Tangipahoa Parish President.

Burgess died last month after a brief illness.

Tangipahoa Parish leaders say they have brainstormed a number of ways to honor the contributions Burgess made to Tangipahoa Parish. While there was some talk about renaming a road or possibly even the Florida Parishes Arena in his memory, the Tangipahoa Parish Government building seemed more appropriate, officials said.

Opened in 1998, the “Courthouse Annex,” as it was referred to at that time, marked a shift from Tangipahoa Parish Government being housed at the Amite Courthouse and into its own building. Although planned on a tight $900,000 budget, Burgess insisted any move out of the courthouse could not cost the taxpayers additional money, so the parish used “pay-as-you-go” funds that had been saved and earmarked for the specific purpose.

In 2018, the parish completed a second building at the East Mulberry Street property to house the Emergency Operations Center. Together, the two structures were dedicated in May 2018 as the “Veterans Memorial Complex;” however, the individual buildings did not carry monikers of their own. Under the proposal going before the Council Monday night, the original annex building could be renamed the “Gordon A. Burgess Governmental Building."

If successfully introduced by the council tonight, the measure will be brought for a public hearing prior to the council’s Aug. 26 meeting. It takes successful passage before the council for the new name to be adopted.

The Parish Council meets at 5:30 p.m. at the TPG offices located at 206 E. Mulberry Street in Amite.
