Arctic air mass on the way tonight through Wednesday

Author: Anonym/Tuesday, January 6, 2015/Categories: Front Page, Latest Stories

FIRST TRUE ARCTIC AIRMASS ON THE WAY.

AN ARCTIC AIRMASS WILL PUSH INTO THE NORTHERN AND HIGH PLAINS THIS EVENING AND BY LATE WEDNESDAY MORNING WILL ALREADY BE WELL INTO PORTIONS OF THE LOWER MISSISSIPPI VALLEY.

VERY COLD AND DRY AIR WILL CONTINUE TO SURGE INTO THE REGION THROUGH WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON AND NIGHT. THIS WILL SET THE STAGE FOR TEMPERATURES TO DROP BELOW LATE IN THE EVENING WITH LOWS RANGING FROM THE UPPER TEENS TO LOWER 20S FOR LOCATIONS ALONG AND NORTH OF THE INTERSTATE 10 AND 12 CORRIDORS.

HARD FREEZE WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM LATE WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY MORNING.

* TEMPERATURE...UPPER TEENS TO LOWER 20S

* DURATION...FREEZING TEMPERATURES WILL PERSIST 12 TO 15 HOURS WITH TEMPERATURES IN THE 20S 9 TO 12 HOURS.

* IMPACTS...FREEZING TEMPERATURES OF THIS MAGNITUDE AND DURATION CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS TO PEOPLE AND PETS WITH INSUFFICIENT WARM SHELTER. SENSITIVE VEGETATION WILL BE SIGNIFICANTLY DAMAGED IF UNPROTECTED.
UNPROTECTED OUTDOOR PIPES MAY ALSO BURST.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A HARD FREEZE WATCH MEANS TEMPERATURES OF 25 DEGREES OR LOWER WILL BE POSSIBLE.

MEASURES SHOULD BE TAKEN TO PROTECT CROPS AND OTHER SENSITIVE VEGETATION.

IF YOU HAVE OUTDOOR PETS THAT WILL NOT BE ABLE TO COME INSIDE. PREPARE A WARM DRY SHELTER WITH ACCESS TO UNFROZEN WATER.

WRAP ANY OUTDOOR PIPES THAT MAY BE SUSCEPTIBLE TO FREEZING AND BURSTING.

A REINFORCING COLD FRONT IS EXPECTED TO BRING HAZARDOUS WINDS AND SEAS TO THE COASTAL WATERS BEGINNING LATE WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON AND
PERSISTING THROUGH THE FIRST HALF OF THURSDAY. A GALE WATCH IS IN EFFECT FOR ALL COASTAL WATERS LATE WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH THURSDAY MORNING.

STRONG NORTHERLY WINDS WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH THURSDAY MORNING WILL LEAD TO LOWER THAN NORMAL WATER LEVELS IN COASTAL MARSHES AND BAYOUS. ANY SHALLOW WATER BOATS IN THESE AREAS COULD
BECOME STRANDED...ESPECIALLY DURING TIMES OF LOW TIDE.

AN ARCTIC AIR MASS WILL MOVE INTO THE AREA WEDNESDAY NIGHT AND IMPACT THE AREA THROUGH FRIDAY. THE COLDEST TEMPERATURES WILL BE EXPERIENCED LATE WEDNESDAY NIGHT AND THURSDAY MORNING. A HARD FREEZE WATCH IS IN EFFECT FOR AREAS GENERALLY ALONG AND NORTH OF A
LINE FROM DONALDSONVILLE TO MANDEVILLE TO SLIDELL TO PASCAGOULA. A FREEZE WATCH IS IN EFFECT FOR AREAS SOUTH OF THE SAME LINE...INCLUDING THE NEW ORLEANS METROPOLITAN AREA. PLEASE REFER TO THE HARD FREEZE WATCH AND FREEZE WATCH PRODUCTS FOR SPECIFIC
DETAILS.

STRONG WINDS WILL ACCOMPANY THE ARCTIC AIRMASS WEDNESDAY NIGHT AND WILL RESULT IN WIND CHILL VALUES IN THE 10 TO 15 DEGREE RANGE ACROSS MUCH OF THE HARD FREEZE WATCH AREA. A WIND CHILL ADVISORY MAY BE NEEDED. FOR AREAS IN THE FREEZE WATCH...WIND CHILL VALUES COULD DROP INTO THE 15 TO 20 DEGREES RANGE
