On two successive weekends in December, the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office issued citations to clerks at thirteen parish stores for selling alcohol to minors. Clerks at one store were cited two weekends in succession. Deputies visited all retail alcohol outlets in the parish, using an underage teen to attempt to purchase alcohol.

The clerks were cited for violation of Louisiana statute 14.93.11 which states, in part, “Whoever violates the provisions of this Section shall be fined not less than five hundred dollars nor more than one thousand dollars or imprisoned for not less than thirty days nor more than six months, or more.”

Clerks at the following retail establishments were cited:

Food Depot, Cumberland Street, Bogalusa
Chevron, Sunset Drive, Bogalusa (2 citations on 2 successive weekends)
Chevron, Highway 10 east, Bogalusa
S & P Truck Stop, Highway 10 east, Bogalusa
Tiger Den Exxon, Hwy 21 South, Bogalusa
Carolina One Stop, Carolina Street, Bogalusa
Discount Gas, Austin Street, Bogalusa
Chevron, Highway 10, Franklinton
Market Max, Washington Street, Franklinton
Valero, Washington Street, Franklinton
John’s Shop, Greenlaw Street, Franklinton
Chevron, Highway 21, Varnado
Texaco, Highway 21, Varnado

Sheriff Randy Seal emphasized that the Sheriff’s Office will continue to make random checks of all establishments which sell alcohol and will enforce state law which requires identification and forbids alcohol sales to minors.

He stated, “I caution all employees to make certain they are following the law by requiring proof of age before selling alcohol. If you sell or provide alcohol to minors, you will be held accountable. The employees who followed the law and demanded proper identification are to be commended.”
