Chief Tim Lentz announces that the Covington Police Department has made an arrest in connection with a shooting that occurred in the early morning hours of the new year.
On Sunday, January 1st, at approximately 01:20 A.M., Covington Police officers received a complaint of an altercation in the 900 block of W 30th Ave involving multiple people, with firearms possibly involved.
Arriving officers found a large group of people arguing over an earlier fight between two females at a local party. The two females involved in the altercation declined to pursue charges against one another. No weapons were found and the crowd was dispersed.
Approximately an hour after the initial call, Covington Police received reports of shots fired in the same area. Responding officers were able to locate multiple shell casings and began interviewing witnesses. Shortly thereafter, officers were advised by dispatchers that three subjects were at the Covington Police Department with a bullet hole in the windshield of their car.
An investigation into the incident revealed that Murray Brown, a 20 year-old Covington man, was involved in an argument with another man stemming from the initial altercation between the two females. During the argument, Murray fired multiple shots at the victim, striking the windshield of his vehicle and narrowly missing the occupants.
A warrant for Murray’s arrest on one count of Attempted Second Degree Murder was obtained by investigators. This afternoon, Murray turned himself in to the Covington Police Department without incident and was subsequently booked into the St. Tammany Parish Jail.
The investigation into this incident is still ongoing and anyone with information is asked to call the Covington Police Department at (985)892-8500, or CrimeStoppers at (504)822-1111.
