25-year-old’s body recovered from Slidell lakefront Friday

St. Tammany Parish Coroner Dr. Charles Preston has authorized the release of the identity of the man who went underwater near the Slidell Marina this afternoon, following the location and notification of his next of kin.

The deceased has been identified as Ferrell Smith, age 25, of Slidell.

Sheriff's Office deputies recovered Smith's body at 5:45 p.m., about two and half hours after he was last seen going under the water about 50 yards from shore. Witnesses said Smith entered the water from Lakeshore Marina.

An autopsy will be conducted Monday, but the presumptive cause of death is drowning. The Sheriff's Office and Coroner's Office are collaborating on the investigation


**UPDATE** The body of the drowning victim was recovered around 5:45 p.m. The St. Tammany Parish Coroner will take custody of the body, and after notifications are made to the family, we will release the identity.

The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office is currently on the scene of a possible drowning at the Lakeshore Marina in Slidell. The STPSO Special Operations division is currently searching for the subject who apparently went swimming around 3:30 this afternoon. A witness said the person went under water and never came back up. We will keep you posted with updates as we get them.
