Springfield woman dies; dump truck driver arrested for crash
From Louisiana State Police:
Prairieville, LA – Shortly before 9:00 am on March 17, 2017, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a five vehicle fatality crash that occurred at the intersection of US 61 and Highway 929 (Post Office Rd.) in Ascension Parish. The crash resulted in the death of 60 year old Kathie Polite of Springfield, LA and the arrest of 59 year old David Henley of Norwood, LA.
The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Henley was traveling northbound on US 61 in a 2000 Mack dump truck. As Henley approached the intersection of US 61 and Hwy 929, he failed to stop for the red traffic signal and proceeded through the intersection. At the same time, Polite was traveling westbound on Hwy 929 in a 2014 Chevrolet Equinox. Polite began making a left turn onto US 61 southbound after her traffic signal turned green. Polite’s vehicle was struck on its driver’s side by Henley’s dump truck in the intersection. The impact caused both vehicles to cross the median into the southbound lanes of US 61 and strike three other vehicles that were stopped in the southbound turn lane.
Polite was properly restrained but sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash. She was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Ascension Parish Coroner’s Office. One other driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital for treatment. Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash but a toxicology sample will be taken from all drivers for analysis.
Henley was placed under arrest and booked into the Ascension Parish Jail for Negligent Homicide and Disregarding a Traffic Control.
