Local fire department issues tips on using heaters in this cold
From St. Tammany Parish Fire District

Wow! Three snow events already this winter in South Louisiana!
Wintery precipitation and frigid temperatures are upon us again for the next couple of days. STFPD #1 would like to take this time to remind everyone of some general heating safety tips.

1. Only purchase/use space heaters with an automatic shut off mode, so that if the heater tips over the unit will shut itself off.
2. Place space heaters on flat, stable surfaces while in use.
3. Maintain at least three feet of clearance around space heaters while in use.
4. Plug space heaters directly into electrical outlets, and not extension cords.
5. When you leave a room or go to sleep, turn off and unplug space heaters.
6. Never use your oven to heat your home.
7. If you have a gas furnace, make sure you have working carbon monoxide detectors installed in your residence.
8. Take this time to make sure that your smoke detectors are also functioning properly.
