Joe Mier weighs-in on the choice of a new school superintendent

As our school board leaders prepare to hire a new Superintendent I want to remind ALL of them that this is THE MOST IMPORTANT decision that they will make for the future of the Tangipahoa Parish School System. Our growth and prosperity depend on improving our public schools. This person will be the missing key to move forward because we have all of the other keys in place.

We have a great University in our Parish
We have a great Community College and Technical Schools in our Parish
We have a great location with the 2 interstate systems in our Parish
We have a great healthcare system in our Parish
We have a great airport with control tower in our Parish
We have a great rail that runs north, south, east and west across our parish
We have a Train Station operating in our Parish
We have a port in our Parish
We have good roads
We have great sports facilities
We have a beautiful River that runs the length of our Parish
We have beautiful Lakes at the south end of our Parish
We have beautiful Downtown areas that attract businesses and people

Where are we lacking? A better public education system.

We have poverty---The only way out of poverty is education

We need more good jobs---The only way to bring good jobs is to provide good public education opportunities

Our parish is 69 out of 69 on total revenue per pupil---We need to invest in education

We are the 12th Largest School district in Louisiana----We need to act like a big player in the game.

Almost 77% of our student population is considered economically disadvantaged----Education is the only thing that will change this issue.

Our Parish Government cannot do this for us-----Our State or National Government cannot do this for us.......We need to make education a priority in Tangipahoa Parish.

Do you want the value of your real estate to increase? Then the public schools have to get better.

The public also has a job to do and to step up and invest and support education.

We have to engage as a parish population of 128,755 residents and over 53,000 households to all push in the same direction.

We have to invest more than $0.00 as a parish-wide tax for education.

School Board Leaders - Please place ALL agendas on the side except to find the best and most qualified person to lead our school system. We are depending on you the school board members to make the right decision.

The hands of many make light work.

Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying and sacrifice.

We can do this - We can do better.

Sincerely,
Joe Mier
Tangipahoa Parish Resident and
Business Owner
