Dufrene, Anderson named Eastside Students of Year
Eighth grader Thaleia Dufrene, daughter of Sidney and Eve Dufrene, has been named Hammond Eastside Magnet's 8th Grade 2017-2018 Student of the Year.

Thaleia is an extremely well-rounded student. She is part of the Gifted program (BYON), she has been involved in the Tangipahoa Parish Book Fair, and she has participated in Talented Theater and Talented Music. In addition to playing on the HEM volleyball team, she also takes piano lessons and has also participated in the Piano Rally. She has performed community service hours at both Belle Maison Nursing Home and the Tangi Food Pantry, as well as assisting students with breakfast in the morning.

For her 8th year, she attends Hammond High Magnet School for both English 1 honors and Algebra 1 honors. Her accomplishments include scoring a 29 on the ACT last year as a 7th grader, maintaining a 4.0 GPA, scoring 98/100 and 93/100 in Piano Rally. She received the 2017 Duke Top Grade Recognition Award. She has also served as co-captain and captain of the HEM robotics team.

Fifth grader Mac Anderson, son of Scarlett and Webb Anderson, has been named Hammond Eastside Magnet’s 5th Grade 2017-2018 Student of the Year. He is interested in hunting, fishing, sports and music including participating in Hammond's recreational flag-football and baseball leagues, HEM's cross country and track teams, taking piano lessons and being a member of HEM's Performing Arts Company. After graduating high school, Mac would like to attend an Ivy League school to study structural engineering. Mac demonstrates the IB World School Learner Profile by being balanced, caring, and knowledgeable. His leadership, activities, recognitions, and service include being on the A honor roll, recently graduating from the D.A.R.E. program, serving on the Quiz Bowl team and participating in Songfest for HEM's Jr. Beta Club.
