Reckless driving on Highway 22 leads to arrest in Ponchatoula

PONCHATOULA, LA- Chief Layrisson reports the arrest of John Brechtel (54-years-old).

Earlier this week at approximately 12:40 pm, the Ponchatoula Police Department received a call from a concerned citizen reporting a vehicle that was traveling Westbound on Hwy 22 through the city of Ponchatoula in a reckless manner.

Officers were able to locate the vehicle and observe the driver swerving in and out of the lanes of travel. Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop when the driver, which was identified as John Brechtel, initially refused to stop and continued driving for about a mile until he pulled over into the Circle K parking lot.

During the traffic stop, Brechtel was unable to produce a driver’s license and was attempting to conceal items in his pants pocket. He appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance and was acting non-compliant and disoriented.

A search of his person revealed the items that were concealed in his pants as being a prescription bottle containing Schedule IV controlled dangerous substance and drug paraphernalia. A standardized field sobriety test was performed by officers in which Brechtel performed poorly. Brechtel was then placed under arrest. He voluntarily submitted a breath sample which was 0.007g%.

Officers also obtained a warrant to draw blood from Mr. Brechtel, which will be sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Brechtel was transported to the Tangipahoa Parish Jail on the charges of Careless Operation of a Vehicle, No Driver’s License on Person, and Driving Under the Influence of a Controlled Dangerous Substance.
